So, in looking for opinions about whether or not to start a blog and what kind of interest there would be, several people threw out the word “paranormal”, so I thought that would be a great topic for my 1st real blog post.
For those of you who aren’t as familiar with me, I am a (somewhat active) lead investigator with East TN Paranormal Research Society. We’re the oldest paranormal group in the state of TN.
One of the most interesting cases I’ve ever been on involved a private residence in Greenback, TN. All the family members names have been changed for their privacy. Steven and Elyse Keaton (if you don’t get it, get off my blog), contacted us because they were concerned about the health and safety of their teenage son, Alex P. Alex had recently fallen into deep depression with episodes of anger and a failed attempt at suicide. Alex had seen figures in his room and heard voices. He had never been diagnosed as having a mental illness. The family, especially Alex, believed that there was some supernatural explanation and asked us to find out.
We got to the house, it was a nice place, typical middle class, table for 4 place. We did our preliminary sweep as the lead (which I wasn’t, at the time), interviewed the clients. We use EMF (electro-magnetic frequency) meters and digital thermometers to get a base line reading of EMF waves and temperature. This helps us to identify spikes or drops in either/both during investigations. Typical baseline EMF in a home is 0.1 to 0.2 milliGauss with bigger numbers around outlets and certain appliances, like the fridge. Most of the house read normal, until we got to Alex’s bedroom. We got readings in the middle of the room in 4s and 5s with spikes in the teens around his TV, which had 3 video game systems hooked and all left on 24 hrs a day. He had a clock radio that gave off a reading in the 20s, a stereo that was similar to that. We discovered he charges his cell phone on the bed, next to his pillow, which gave off about a 5, but it’s RIGHT NEXT TO HIS PATE! Then, when we opened the closet, we found the HVAC unit, which gave off a reading of over 200 before the meter topped out. This closet, incidentally, is the location of his failed suicide attempt. It created what we in the business (listen to me, sounding all hacky “the business”? Who the hell do I think I am?) call a “fear cage”. Incidentally, that is an awesome metal band name. He surrounded himself with super high EMFs for at least 8 hours a day. We pretty much had this one figured out before we even turned the lights out.
Alex suffers from EMF sensitivity. People who are sensitive to EMF waves and spend time in the proximity of these waves can feel anything from nausea, dizziness, fatigue, even skin irritations. They also can feel paranoia and depression, it can even cause hallucinations.
Regardless of those findings, we conducted our investigation. We had very little to no activity happen, a couple of random noises that were tough to explain, but could have normal explanations. We reviewed all of the audio and video we took we nothing really to write home about. We contacted the family and set up our follow up meeting and discussed what we found. We told Steven, Elyse and Alex about the readings in Alex’s room and took them up there with an EMF meter to show them what we were talking about. We told them all about EMF sensitivity and suggested he try sleeping for a week in his sister, Mallory’s room, which didn’t have all of that EMF in it. We also suggested while he was out of the room, that Steven and Elyse replace his clock radio and make Alex move his phone charger and turn off all his video games when he was done with them. We also suggested having an electrician come out an look at the HVAC unit to see what could be done about all EMF.
We had a follow up call with the family a week later and Elyse couldn’t stop going on about how she had gotten her son back. Alex was happier, he was getting more involved with his friends and family again. She was almost in tears, she was so happy. So were we.
Most times, I don’t judge the success of an investigation on how much paranormal activity we find, but on the help and comfort we can provide to the people who are looking for answers and solutions. As far as most clients (the ones who aren’t looking to get famous because they think all ghost hunting groups have TV shows) are concerned, the cases where we can prove that they aren’t being haunted are the MOST successful.
