It’s been a minute, I know. In my defense, my work has been super-uber-busy due to an increased work load, so when I get home, I don’t want to touch a computer. But I had to post something because we’ve entered my favorite time of the year, my favorite month and we are closing in on my favorite holiday – HALLOWEEN! I’ve loved all things scary and creepy since I was a kid and saw the Thriller music video for the first time (the music was scandal-proof). I’m a little late blowing the house up with decorations (it’s happening this week come Hell or high water), but I’ve been inundating myself with horror movies for 2 months now in anticipation. And not your typical Myers-Freddie-Leatherface-Voorhees movies. Those classics are epic in their own right, but I love to view outside of the box. So, in the spirit of public service, I thought I would give you all who enjoy a good scary flick a list of great, no-name, horror movies to curl up to between now and All Hallow’s Eve. And the best part is they are all (last I checked) on Netflix. Mazel tov and Happy Samhain!
Disclaimer: I am not a big fan of “found footage” movies and I recognize that it is an over-used devise. When I watched all of these movies, I had NO IDEA that most of them were “found footage” films. They just happened to be such and were really scary and really enjoyable.
I love a good UFO/Alien horror movie. I’m a firm believer that we are not alone in the galaxy and when that idea takes a scary turn, it’s truly terrifying. 3 awesome movies in this genre are Honeymoon, Area 51, and Hangar 10.

A fantastic movie about a young couple who goes into the woods for a honeymoon in her family’s old cabin. They run into an old friend of hers and have a strange interaction and things just get weirder from there. I will warn you there is one scene that is not for the squeamish.

Really great movie for fellow conspiracy theorists out there. Two friends agree to go with our protagonist to check out Area 51 after he has an eye-opening experience. Let’s just say it doesn’t matter how prepared they are, they get in over their heads.

An awesome scary movie from the UK. An ex-boyfriend agrees to film a lovely young lady and her new dude on a metal detecting trip. Yeah, he’s REALLY into treasure hunting with a metal detector. The ex is interested in the area for other reasons, and they start to experience some awesome aerial shows that lead to terror.
Another of my favorite horror genres is the possession/religious/demonic horror, and there’s a lot of great, little-known titles out there. The Taking of Deborah Logan, The House of the Devil, and Starry Eyes really stand out.

If that poster doesn’t scare you a little, then you’re dead inside. Not your usual possession tale, a grad student and her film crew head to the home of Deborah Logan, who’s daughter has volun-told her that they will be the subject of the student’s thesis film about Alzheimer’s patients. I’m going to spoil this for you a little bit: she WAY doesn’t have Alzheimer’s.

This is one of the coolest scary movies made in the last 5 years, especially if you are a fan of late 70s and early to mid 80s horror like I am. The main reason for this is that the entire film LOOKS and FEELS like it was made in that era. No super-flashy effects, no CGI, it’s even filming and sound was even done with old equipment. It’s was a blast to watch!

A young wanna-be starlet does whatever it takes, albeit apprehensively, to really make it in Hollywood. To quote the very late, very great Dr. Gonzo, “Buy the ticket, take the ride.”
Honorable mentions for At the Devil’s Door (with that girl from Glee), Exorcismus (standard possession flick but good) and Mercy (which will appeal to heavy Lovecraft fans AND Corl from The Walking Dead is in it!
I’m only going to talk about one ghost flick, because they are typically a little weak sauce for me. This could possibly be due to my occasional hunting for them. However, I found Entity (not to be confused with The Entity, another awesome, but older film) to be a good, creepy scare.

A UK paranormal/conspiracy investigative TV show takes their employed psychic to the Siberian woods to investigate a nearly 30 year old mystery at the request of a local. They discover some really dark secrets buried in one of the creepiest places in the world.
To me, though, the scariest movies are the ones that don’t involve ghosts or monsters or aliens or the supernatural. People are the scariest creatures on Earth, and the things we are capable of are even more terrifying. My favorite genre of horror is the “this could really happen” scary movies, featuring The Houses that October Built, Creep, and, my new movie obsession, The Conspiracy.

5 friends rent an RV and go on a road trip to find the most extreme, scariest “haunted” (the kind you pay for) attractions in the region. Sounds fun, right? It isn’t. Truly creepy.

Creep is a really original, quirky, at times funny, look at why you don’t answer newspaper ads. A freelance videographer is hired to film Josef for a day to leave something behind for his unborn son as he is facing his own mortality. Shit. Gets. Weird.

This is truly one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. You won’t jump, you cling to the arm of your sweetie. You will be left with a lot of deep seated, terrifying questions about the world you live in. And don’t think I’m dropping a documentary on you all tweed-jacket-with-leather-elbow-patch style. I’m a conspiracy theorist, but I’m not the kind of ass who starts every party conversation with “You know, you seem like an intelligent person…” This movie is fictional (keep telling yourself that), but the fear is real.
That’s it. I’ve given you 10 great movies and 3 honorable mentions. What the hell else do you want from me? I’m not going to spoon feed you. Get off here and go watch some of these. I gotta go decorate. Enjoy your movies, don’t eat too much popcorn, and see you in Hell, movie-goers.
