So, to the surprise of no one, probably, I’m a big fan of The X Files. Recently, I decided to start rewatching the original series on Netflix. I’m about halfway through the 3rd season and I’m now burdened 2 very related, problematic questions. I welcome the input of anyone who enjoyed the show, anyone who hated, or, just, anyone.

Now, before I get into this, know that I am approaching this show and these questions under the premise that the universe of this show is really and not that it is a show with writers and producers and PAs used to fuel Duchovny’s rampant sex addiction. So I’m not looking for feedback in the vein of “well, the writers wrote it that way because…“. Now, with that out of the way, we can proceed with the matters at hand.

Nagging question # 1: Why did Scully have such a hard time believing Mulder?

I mean seriously. I realized she was first assigned to the X Files as a skeptic to try to discount his work and she’s got a mind for science and the explainable. She worked with him for so many years, but why, oh why, after working with him for 3 fucking weeks, and seeing the things that he was correct about…? I mean, after a few weeks, I would’ve just bought in to his theories immediately and without question. NO MORE “So, what you’re telling me is that this guy is some sort of a monster who uses a secreted chemical to digest the fat cells of the women he kills?” It would be more like “Yeah, that sounds like a sound theory, Mulder. So where do you want to start looking for ‘The Fat Sucker’. By the way, I think we should call him ‘The Fat Sucker’, what do you think?” And I know she eventually comes to believe, but the amount of shit she saw to get to that point is unbelievable.

Nagging question #2: Why, oh why, didn’t Mulder ever call Scully out on this bullshit?

I mean SERIOUSLY!! By my current position in the series and their shared FBI careers, they’ve worked on nearly 60 X Files cases, including government experiments, alien experiments, government cover ups of government/alien experiments, a bunch of MOW (Monsters of the Week), psychics, witches, A FUCKING PARASITE MONSTER MAN!?! You know what, if I was Mulder, that would’ve been the absolute breaking point. No more “Scully, how can you cling on to your scientific explanations when we’re clearly dealing with a new sort of species?” It would have been more like “LOOK! LOOK, SCULLY! What ELSE do you need from me? THERE is a half-man, half-fluke, just like I said there was. And you didn’t believe me. You’ve NEVER believed me, Scully!” *breaks down in tears* I actually feel bad for the dude. He grows up in a family with a dad who sells both him and his sister (in a much bigger way) out to the government and aliens, his sister is abducted, defining the rest of his life, he works in a department of the FBI that is ALWAYS in danger of being shut down, and then he’s saddled with this heartless, iron-box who doesn’t have one bone in her body capable of thinking outside of the fucking box, who continues to not believe despite his own glowing record of being right about the freaky-deekies that they deal with on the reg. Poor, porn-addicted, Spooky.

I welcome your input on these questions. Hell, the right point of view might help me sleep a little better at night. Oh, well. Good night and good luck, you filthy animals. And remember, the truth is out there.
